Girl visual ad essay

This ad concentrates on one of the things that, undoubtedly, every single person, regardless of gender has heard at some point in their lives: “You throw like a girl!” These words were thrown like daggers on the playground, usually out of the sneering mouth of a classmate. Some parents may have even said it to their children.

However, the surprise at the end when the young girls are shown giving all they have in their sports, and later, when the older girls are shown doing the same thing, also bolsters Always’s credibility, because it shows the impact a female-positive message can have on a girl’s self-confidence. This ad also uses logos to make its point.

With Emma Watson’s recent speech on feminism at the UN as Goodwill Ambassador, the increasing frequency of celebrities like Beyoncé self-identifying as feminists, and the current prevalence of women’s reproductive rights cases, there couldn’t have been a more perfect time for an ad reaching to empower young girls.

The message, “We asked young girls the same question” appears. Girls aged ten and younger are shown running furiously in place and around the studio, punching the air with passion, and throwing the imaginary ball far into the distance. The screen shows the question, “When did doing something ‘like a girl’ become an insult?”
